New CEN Standard Address Safety for Sporting Pushchairs

In July 2024, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) introduced EN1888-3:2024, the third part of the EN1888 series. This standard specifically targets pushchairs intended for leisure sports activities. Here are the key points:

1.       Scope and Exclusions:

  • EN1888-3 applies to wheeled child conveyances used while running, jogging, or skating.

  • Ice skating pushchairs remain excluded due to safety hazards.

  • Other unconventional pushchair types (e.g., longboard-pushchair combos) are also not covered.

2.       Safety Enhancements:

  • Suitability for Use: Pushchairs must provide a safe ride on uneven surfaces and secure positioning for the child.

  • Entanglement Hazards: While EN 1888-1+A1:2022 assesses this, clause 8.4 doesn’t apply to tether straps (if provided).

  • Stability: Improved requirements account for steep and uneven terrain.

  • Structural Integrity: Rigorous testing considers longer, faster, and more intensive use, including wheel strength.

  • Braking Device: Pushchairs need efficient braking to prevent high-speed incidents.

  • Carer Control: A tether ensures the ability to stop the pushchair if the carer loses control.

  • Visibility: Reflectors or retroreflective materials on all sides enhance visibility.

  • Product Information: Sporting use is suitable for children aged at least 9 months. Warnings emphasize care during shared activities. Protective gear (child helmet, carer’s reflective clothing) is recommended.

Remember, safety first! Great Safe 🌟The standard was made available by CEN in July 2024. European national bodies have six months to publish in their catalogs and any conflicting national standards must be withdrawn by January 2025, at the latest. When it comes to childcare gear and kiddo furniture, safety and quality are our top priorities.
